Senior Protein Scientist
Title Senior Protein Scientist
Location London
Compensation £50-60k depending on experience, plus equity
Contract type Full time
Company
FabricNano (fabricnano.com) is a venture-backed startup founded at the end of 2018. We are on a mission to transform industrial chemical processes using cell-free biomanufacturing to empower our users with the world’s most advanced, flexible and easily-scalable biocatalyst platform. You’ll be joining our team at a pivotal point in the development of our products and culture helping us build a sustainable future powered by enzymes.
Summary of the role
As a Senior Protein Scientist you’ll be guiding and executing critical path work that is essential to our mission. Your goal is to help us design and identify the best permutations of enzymes required to demonstrate the full potential of FabricNano’s enzyme immobilization technology. You will not only need to bring technical excellence, but also a growth mindset to develop yourself and your team members! Your day-to-day may involve enzyme design, cloning, protein expression, enzyme characterisation using assays and general biochemical methods, project management and leading others. The right candidate will have the opportunity to impact our people, our enzyme development capabilities, processes, platform and FabricNano as a whole.
What you'll be doing
- Perform and troubleshoot experiments independently, supporting others to do the same.
- Design DNA constructs for cloning and expression of recombinant enzymes.
- Lead protein expression across a range of scales (1mL microwell - 500mL shake flasks).
- Characterise enzymes and proteins using established biochemical and/or enzymatic assays, participating in the assay development process where needed.
- Generate quantitative scientific data that is accurate and precise.
- Ensure the timely reporting of all SOPs internal/external reports at a high standard.
- Make significant contributions towards the technical direction of the Enzyme Team by supporting our Enzyme Group Lead in the creation of technical roadmaps and monthly OKRs.
- Work flexibly across multiple interdisciplinary programmes and functional activities, demonstrating a willingness to move between functions as needed is essential.
- Lead your fellow scientists and be instrumental in their personal and professional development. Leverage your experience to provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior members.
What we're looking for
Essential:
- 4-5 years’ experience in microbial enzyme expression and characterisation in industry or as a Postdoc.
- Experience with traditional and/or scarless DNA cloning methods.
- Experience with recombinant protein expression in E. coli and troubleshooting difficult expressions (yield, toxicity, solubility issues).
- Comfortable executing enzymatic assays and interpreting their results.
- Experience with basic bioinformatics tools for the analysis of protein sequences and structure (BLAST searches, multiple sequence alignment, Pymol).
- Experience leading projects and small teams with multiple stakeholders and scientists
- Fluency in both technical and conversational English.
- Experience as a people manager, enhancing the growth of others (supervising the research of PhD students does not count)
Desired:
- Experience with high-throughput protein expression.
- Experience with liquid handling robots.
